ROCK ISLAND, Illinois -- Political veteran but first time candidate Phil Hare has beaten Republican challenger Andrea Zinga.
The top aide to retiring Congressman Lane Evans declared victory just before ten Tuesday night, in a packed hotel ballroom, where his former boss had done the same 12 times before.
''I'm tired and I'm feeling wonderful, it's been a great race, and we're glad it's over,'' said Hare. ''Hopefully, we'll be in the majority before the night's over, and we can start getting some things done for this country.''
To chants of ''Phil, Phil, Phil,'' Hare was accompanied on the podium by Evans, who was forced to retire early because of his battle with Parkinson's disease. ''I don't think I've ever seen such a huge turnout for a newcomer,'' said Evans in an interview before Hare's victory speech. When asked if this was a bittersweet night for him, Evans said ''No, you know I figure I've had all the luck in the world, and am very happy to have the support.''
Hare credits an army of volunteers and supporters for his win, and told the crowd he will work for working men and women in the country. ''For those who are struggling to make ends meet and for those who want to see this country move in the right direction,'' Hare said.
He also paid tribute to Evans, who recieved a standing ovation from the cheering crowd, saying he had a ''bittersweet'' meeting with his former boss. ''I've got some big shoes to fill, and I'll never forget the example set by Lane,''
Hare heads to Washington Sunday.
